1/10/2024 0 Comments Rosin flux removalIf they aren’t removed with a cleaning process, the residues can draw in ambient moisture from the air and lead to corrosion of component leads, and PCB contacts. On a typical benchtop, usually next to the flux bottle, is a similar-looking bottle of isopropyl alcohol (IPA) used to mop up the resulting flux residue. Long-life durable goods may fall somewhere in-between, with cleaning a requirement, but without the rigid testing and controls.įlux residues left on electronic circuit boards are acidic. In that example, cleaning will be required after assembly and any subsequent rework, and the process will be thoroughly tested for effectiveness and repeatability. Rosin Mildly Affected (RMA): Has activators for cleaning the solder. Post reflow, it leaves trace amounts of noncorrosive, resinous residue on or around solder joints. Rosin (R): Leaves no residue after soldering, but you can only use it on clean surfaces. Residue removal is achievable with a compatible solvent but more difficult than RMA fluxes. No-clean flux is really low-residue solder paste. The clear, hard residue is not conductive or corrosive. Activity is low-to-moderate and compatible with many assembly types. NC flux is best suited for easily soldered surfaces. Always use latex gloves and goggles when working with isopropyl alcohol. Flux residue can be cleaned with an isopropyl alcohol (IPA) solution. I know cleanup is recommended: I have been scrubbing the boards with 90 alcohol and a toothbrush, then rinsing with water, blot with a paper towel, air dry. No Clean (NC) flux combines rosin, solvent, and a chemical activator. Rosin flux is the most commonly used in electrical soldering. On the other end of the scale, requirements for pacemaker electronics, where board failure could directly lead to death, are going to be much stricter. 1 Been doing a lot of soldering lately using a paste flux (MG Chemicals, Rosin Flux Paste) with the 63/37 solder. In that case, an EMS supplier may use no-clean flux and forgo the cleaning process. For a disposable product like a computer keyboard, nobody loses their life if it stops working. No-clean fluxes should be thrown into the garbage (or perhaps disposed of in an environmentally responsible manner). Canfield Technologies Chemtronics Chip Quik Inc. RMA/RA fluxes are pretty benign, though some recommend cleaning. Reliability requirements are generally driven by the nature of the final product.
